Pregnancy and Birth: The Essential Checklists By Karen Sullivan
English | 2009 |  192 pages

Pregnancy and Birth: The Essential Checklists covers everything parents need to know and more when expecting a new baby. It alerts parents as to what to prepare, what to buy, what to ask, what to do, and when to do it. It not only shows parents how to stay on top of everything, but it also helps them to remain one step ahead.

The book is highly practical, comprehensive and straightforward, comprising essential lists of simple steps and reminders to help parents anticipate everything they need to do in pregnancy, during birth, and with their newborn baby. Starting with what to do when the test is positive (for example, book to see your doctor and begin taking folic acid), it takes parents right through to the essential clothes, toys and equipment to buy and developmental milestones for 0-3, 3-6, 6-9 and 9-12 months and preparing for their baby's first birthday party. It covers all the planning for the minutiae of daily life, listing what to put in the pregnancy handbag and how many diapers to buy, and listing everything needed for the big day (for example the birth plan, the birth partner's checklist, reflexology for labor and what labor snacks to bring along).

Medical Terminology Demystified
McGraw-Hill Professional | English | 2005-11-17 | ISBN: 0071461043 | 400 pages

There’s no easier, faster, or more practical way to learn the really tough subjects

Medical Terminology Demystified covers all the basic terms of disease and injury, abnormal anatomy and physiology, surgical techniques, drugs, and other therapies--in the context of real, practical health issues. This self-teaching guide comes complete with key points, background information, quizzes at the end of each chapter, and even a final exam.

Dale Layman, Ph.D., Grand Ph.D. in Medicine, is Professor of Biology and Human Anatomy and Physiology at Joliet Junior College. He is the author of McGraw-Hill's Biology Demystified, Anatomy Demystified, and Physiology Demystified. He is the first Grand Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine in the United States and has received numerous other international honors and awards for his writing and creative thinking.

This book is for people who want to get acquainted with the basic concepts of medical terminology without having to take a formal course. It can also serve as a supplemental text in a classroom, tutored, or home-schooling environment. It should also be useful for career changers who need to refresh their knowledge of the subject. I recommend that you start at the beginning of this book and go straight through.
There are 5 icons (cartoon pictures) that repeatedly appear in the page margins of every chapter. Each icon takes the form of a “Memory Pill”—a key fact for you to write down and remember in a “Memory Pillbox” (handy numbered grid) at chapter end. An Anatomy icon indicates a key fact about normal body structure. Conversely, a Physiology icon labels an important fact about normal body function. Knowing some of these key structure-function facts in the normal body helps you to understand their associated disease and disorders within the
abnormal body.
The medical terminology of the book provides key facts tagged as Disease icons and other facts as Treatment/Therapy icons. Finally, there are numerous Background and History icons that identify critical people and historical events behind the development of medical terminology. A special icon is that of Hippocrates (pronounced as hih-PAHK-rah-tees). Hippocrates was an ancient Greek physician who is considered the Father of Modern Medicine. For this reason, MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY DEMYSTIFIED is subtitled as “A Visit with Hippocrates.” The Ghost of Hippocrates is our narrator, who guides us along throughout the book. He is occasionally assisted by both Professor Joe, the Talking Skeleton (from ANATOMY DEMYSTIFIED and PHYSIOLOGY DEMYSTIFIED), and by Baby Heinie (his mischievous little sidekick). The goal is to provide some meaningful “edu-tainment”—“education” plus “entertainment”—for the reader.

Medical imaging now plays a major role in diagnosis, choice of therapy, and follow-up. However, patients are often intimidated by the multiple imaging modalities available, the indications for their use, the imposing equipment, what the examinations are like and how long they last, and the advantages and disadvantages of various procedures. This book is designed to provide explanations for these and other issues in order to relieve some of the anxiety related to medical imaging studies.

Encyclopedia of Diseased and Disorders

English | 2010 | ISBN: 0761479414 | 481 pages

The Encyclopedia of Diseases and Disorders provides authoritative information on a wide variety of diseases and health disorders. Although the focus in lanning this collection of articles was on subjects of interest to young readers, the information provided here is valuable to users of any age. More than two undred articles are categorized in three major areas of interest: infections, noninfectious diseases, and mental disorders. The prevalence of infections and their periodic outbreaks make headlines, especially when the news concerns new and emerging infectious diseases, but reports on the resurgence of old courges such as tuberculosis and up-to-date information about everyday health issues are also important. Articles on noninfectious diseases cover a broad pectrum of illnesses, including heart attacks, diabetes, and kidney stones, among others. Mental illness is common worldwide, and depression, eating isorders, and anxiety are particularly common in adolescents. It is important to note that many diseases are preventable; therefore, knowledge of these iseases, how they are transmitted, and the effectiveness of prevention strategies could help reduce disease transmission in particular populations, including oung people. While this encyclopedia is not a substitute for obtaining advice and treatment from a licensed medical practitioner, the knowledge about disease ffered in this reference work can help promote good health. All articles were written and edited by experts in the field, including specialists in mental health, edicine, infectious disease, and microbiology. The content of these articles can be accessed and enhanced in a variety of ways because of their structured rganization, crossreferencing, the simple A-Z format, and the provision of glossaries and resources for further reading. Valuable information is also conveyed hrough photographs, charts, graphs, and artworks with clear descriptive captions.
