Molly Courtenay, Matt Griffiths
"Medication Safety: An Essential Guide"
Cambridge University Press | 2009 | ISBN: 0521721636 | 210 pages | PDF | 2,3 MB
The supply and administration of medicines is an area of practice in which a number of healthcare professionals (e.g. nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals) are involved. Prescribing is a relatively new role which many of these healthcare professionals have adopted. Medication Safety focuses on promoting safety in the delivery of medicines. Chapters explore the various stages in the medication process including safety in prescribing, dispensing and administering drugs. Adverse reactions, parenteral administration, dosage calculations, safety with controlled drugs, and reporting errors and near misses are all addressed in evidence-based contributions from a highly experienced team of contributors. This text is essential reading for all healthcare professionals involved in the delivery of medicines to patients.

• Timely and much needed text due to the rise of non-medical prescribing • Discusses safety at all stages of the medication process including prescribing, dispensing and administering drugs • From a highly experienced editor and contributor team, known internationally in the field of non-medical prescribing

"Antibiotic Policies: Controlling Hospital Acquired Infection"
English | ISBN: 1441917330 | 2011 | 222 pages

The first book was on "Theory and Practice" of antibiotic stewardship in its broadest sense -the how to do it and the do's and don’ts. The second, on "Controlling resistance" was very much on the relationships between use and resistance and beginning to home in on the hospital as the main generator of resistance, but mainly looking at it fr om a disease/clinical perspective. The last 3 chapters on MRSA, ended wh ere the 3rd book will take off. "Controlling HAI " will concentrate on specific MDR organisms highlighting their roles in the current pandemic of HAI and emphasizing that the big issue is not so much infection control but antibiotic control, in the same way that antibiotic over-reliance/ over-use has caused the problem in the first place. Up 'till now the emphasis for controlling MRSA, C diff and all the other MDROs has very much been on IC, which clearly isn't working. This book will gather all the evidence for the increasingly popular view that much more must be done in the area of antibiotic policies/ stewardship, especially when we are in danger of a "post antibiotic" era, due to a real shortage of new agents in the pipeline.

Ashraf Mozayani and Lionel Raymon, "Handbook of Drug Interactions: A Clinical and Forensic Guide"
2012 | ISBN: 1617792217 | 839 pages

Adverse drug reactions and interactions are still a major headache for healthcare professionals around the world. The US Food and Drug Administration's database recorded almost 300,000 serious adverse events in 2009 alone, of which 45,000 instances proved fatal. This updated new edition of the indispensable guide to drug interactions incorporates fresh research completed since the book's original publication by Humana Press in 2004. Additions include a new section on pharmacogenomics, a rapidly growing field that explores the genetic basis for the variability of responses to drugs. This new material reviews important polymorphisms in drug metabolizing enzymes and applies the findings to forensic interpretation, using case studies involving opiates as exemplars. Existing chapters from the first edition have in most cases been updated and reworked to reflect new data or incorporate better tables and diagrams, as well as to include recent drugs and formulations. Recent references have been inserted too. The handbook features extra material on illicit drug use, with a new chapter tackling the subject that covers cocaine, amphetamines and cannabis, among others. The section on the central nervous system also deals with a number of drugs that are abused illicitly, such as benzodiazepines, opiates flunitrazepam and GHB, while so-called 'social' drugs such as alcohol and nicotine are still discussed in the book's section on environmental and social pharmacology. Focusing as before on detailed explanation and incorporating both pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic drug interactions, this book will continue to be a lodestar for health and forensic professionals as well as students.

"Clinical Pharmacology: Current Topics and Case Studies"
Sp rin ger | 2010 | ISBN: 3709101433 | 430 pages

Today we witness an eventful time in which the powerful new forces of genomics, information technology and economics are rapidly changing the science and art of medicine. This will require more specialization than ever before. However, there is also an increasing demand for an integrated approach, which is provided by the discipline of Clinical Pharmacology (CP). CP pursues a scientific goal by studying drug action in patients and volunteers, a clinical goal by administering appropriate drug therapy and a regulatory goal by assessing the risk/benefit ratio of drug candidates in drug development and reimbursement. This introduction to current topics of CP covers traditional topics of clinical drug research and trial methodology but also provides insight in current topics like genomics, imaging technology and issues in drug reimbursement. A number of concrete case studies in clinical drug research and development help to give a better understanding of the general principles of CP.
