Rather than presenting policy/ethics as overly technical, this book takes a novel approach of framing public and private health in terms of political philosophy, ethics, and popular examples. Each chapter ties back to the general ethics or political literature as applicable, which are not customarily parts of the current public health curriculum. The author's work on the Orgcomplexity blog has touched on this subject by systemically exploring public policy issues, and the tone of this book mimics the blog with an extension of the arguments.
It describes foundational community health concepts and procedures and presents proven strategies for engaging communities as resources for their own health improvement-an important determinant of individual well-being. It is based on recommendations by the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and on the premise that healthy communities are those with populations that participate in their own health promotion, maintenance, and sustenance. The book is unique in its integration of environmental and social justice issues as they significantly affect the advancement of community health.

The text focuses on community-oriented health interventions informed by prevention, inclusiveness, and timeliness that both promote better health and are more cost effective than individually focused interventions. It addresses the foundations of community-oriented health services including their history, social determinants, concepts, and policies as well as the economics of community-oriented health services and health disparities and equity. It covers procedures for designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating sustainable community health coalitions along with tools for measuring their success. Detailed case studies describe specific settings and themes in U.S. and international community health practice in which communities are both enactors and beneficiaries. An accompanying instructor's manual provides learning exercises, field-based experiential assignments, and multiple-choice questions. A valuable resource for students and practitioners of education, public policy, and social services, this book bridges the perspectives of environmental justice, public health, and community well-being and development, which, while being mutually interdependent, have rarely been considered together.

KEY FEATURES:
Offers a new paradigm for improving public health through community-driven health coalitions
Includes evidence-based strategies for engaging communities in the pursuit of health
Demonstrates how to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate community health partnerships
Presents transdisciplinary approaches that consider environmental and social justice variables
Includes contributions of international authors renowned in community health research and practice
To meet the ongoing need for quality information on elder health, the Encyclopedia of Aging and Public Health combines multiple perspectives to offer readers a more accurate and complete picture of the aging process.

The book takes a biopsychosocial approach to the complexities of its subject. In-depth introductory chapters include coverage on a historical and demographic overview of aging in America, a guide to biological changes accompanying aging, an analysis of the diversity of the U.S. elder population, legal issues commonly affecting older adults, and the ethics of using cognitively impaired elders in research.

From there, over 425 entries cover the gamut of topics, trends, diseases, and phenomena: Specific populations, including ethnic minorities, custodial grandparents, and centenarians; core medical conditions associating with aging, from cardiac and pulmonary diseases to Parkinson s and Alzheimers; mental and emotional disorders; drugs/vitamins/alternative medicine; disorders of the eyes, feet, and skin insomnia and sleep disorders; malnutrition and eating disorders; sexual and gender-related concerns and a broad array of social and political issues, including access to care, abuse/neglect, veterans affairs, and assisted suicide.

Entries on not-quite-elders concerns (e.g., midlife crisis, menopause) are featured as well. And all chapters and entries include references and resource lists. The Encyclopedia has been developed for maximum utility to clinicians, social workers, researchers, and public health professionals working with older adults. Its multidisciplinary coverage and scope of topics make this volume an invaluable reference for academic and public libraries.
Each chapter introduces concepts of economic development and population health, and uses case studies to illustrate the same. These case studies include program and policy examples from Bangladesh, Chile, Haiti, Rwanda, South Africa and Sri Lanka. This text examines the impact of macroeconomic adjustment programs, health care restructuring, investment in primary health care, public-private partnerships, and the challenges of program coordination and up-scaling in stable and conflict-ridden countries. Harris
"Evaluating Public and Community Health Programs"
Jossey-Bass | 2010 | ISBN: 0470400870 | 240 pages

Eval uating Public and Community Health Programs combines an introduction to public and community health program evaluation with a detailed survey of methods in community assessment, planning, program design, quantitative and qualitative data collection, data analysis, and reporting of findings. The book presents an approach built on the two primary evaluation frameworks that are most common in public and community health: the Donaldson three-step program theory-driven evaluation model and CDC's six-step Framework for Program Evaluation in Public Health. The author emphasizes practical, ongoing evaluation strategies that involve all program stakeholders, not just evaluation experts, and presents a simple and effective standards-based four-step model that will produce rich and useful results. The book's resources (scenarios, worksheets, and guidelines) can be used throughout the planning, implementation, and evaluation process. In addition, each chapter includes a list of learning objectives, key terms, and ideas for review, as well as summaries and discussion questions that can reinforce each chapter's lessons.
The reports come directly from the European Union (EU) medicines safety database EudraVigilance, and are one of the many types of data used by regulators to monitor the benefits and risks of a medicine once authorised. The new website is part of the Agency’s continuing efforts to ensure EU regulatory processes are transparent and open and is a key step in the implementation of the EudraVigilance access policy.
The information currently on the website relates to approximately 650 medicines and active substances authorised through the centralised procedure, which is managed by the Agency. Information on the website is presented in the form of a single report per medicine or active substance. Each report pulls together the total number of individual suspected adverse effect reports submitted to EudraVigilance by Member States and marketing authorisation holders. These aggregated data can be viewed by age group, sex, type of suspected adverse effect and by outcome. Within a year the Agency aims to additionally publish suspected adverse effect reports for common drug substances used in nationally authorised medicines. In June, the Agency will launch the website in the remaining 22 official EU languages.
Ageing Across Europe
Source: WRVS (UK)
Fr om Executive Summary:
Many European countries, including the UK, are now facing the dual challenge of responding to the demographic changes brought by population ageing, while also implementing tough austerity measures following the 2008 financial and economic crisis. With increasing pressure on public budgets, this is an important moment to consider what it is that makes a country a good place to grow old, and wh ere possible to learn lessons from our European neighbours on the policies and services that are most effective in giving older people a good quality of life. This new evidence will contribute to a national debate in the UK about our aspirations for our older citizens and how we might best achieve them in an increasingly challenging fiscal environment.
We have chosen three comparator countries from the EU for this study: Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden. Each of these countries has a unique set of social and cultural characteristics, policies and institutional traditions, which can offer the UK valuable insights into the many factors that support or challenge positive experiences of ageing.
The methodology for this research had two main elements:
• a literature review to explore each country’s unique demographic context and identify the institutional frameworks, policies and services that are in place to support older people
• quantitative analysis of European Social Survey data to compare experiences of ageing across the four EU countries in the five policy domains of income and poverty, health and health provision, well-being, social inclusion and participation, and age discrimination.
<noindex>http://www.wrvs.org.uk/Uploads/Documents/Reports%20and%20Reviews/ageing_across_europe_may24_2012.pdf</noindex> (PDF;1.6MB)
