Kenneth M. Heilman
Postgraduate Year One: Lessons in Caring
Published: 2008-10-13 | ISBN: 019532126X | 192 pages

A world-renowned clinician, teacher, and researcher in cognitive and behavioral neurology, Dr. Ken Heilman has found that stories of his own initiation into the world of doctoring are one of the best ways to engage students and trainees about the common professional, medical, and ethical challenges they will face in daily practice. The twenty-five stories gathered here span the author's first year of clinical training at Bellevue Hospital during the 1960s following his graduation from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. That year- known in the past as internship or first-year residency and now called post graduate year one- is recognized as one of the most intellectually, emotionally, and physically demanding in a physician's life. For the author, it was to hold the most valuable lessons on caring for patients and to exert the greatest lasting influence on how he practices medicine. Each story in this book conveys a core lesson about the practice of medicine and also tells a wonderful tale- about how the author contracted tuberculosis because of a colleague's carelessness, a tough nurse who was a great teacher, a cardiologist who missed a diagnosis because of his arrogance, an acid-dropping ascetic who turned tricks on the side, a fellow trainee caught in a lie, and, as timeless a story as there ever was, the utter impossibility of finding a parking spot in New York City, among others.

Auskultation und Perkussion: Inspektion und Palpation (Auflage: 15)
Published: 2009-08-26 | ISBN: 313137215X | 260 pages

Ben Goldacre
"Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma Flacks"
2010 | ISBN-10: 0865479186 | 304 pages

British doctor Goldacre is funny and blunt as he bashes journalists, nutritionists, homeopaths, politicians, and pharmaceutical companies—his favorite targets. Many supposed experts, he writes, are actually people like Gillian McKeith, who recommends enemas for forehead pimples and whose PhD comes from a nonaccredited correspondence course. Goldacre also criticizes South Africa’s health minister, who turned down antiretroviral drugs for AIDS sufferers, instead advocating for raw garlic, lemons, beetroot, and potatoes. Weaving in medical history, he covers famous mistakes, such as Dr. Spock advising moms to put their babies to sleep on their bellies (now known to increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome) and Dr. Andrew Wakefield erroneously linking vaccines and autism (which led many parents to stop immunizing their kids). No coward, he takes former prime minister Tony Blair to task for refusing to say whether he had vaccinated his son. Some readers may wish for more American examples and institutions because this was supposedly retooled for the U.S. market. But all in all, Bad Science is a fun, informative read. --Karen Springen

2011 | ISBN-10: 1441982337 | 339 pages

The first edition of this book (titled “The Clinician’s Guide to Medical Writing”) has become a standard in its field and remains an indispensible reference for any clinician, academic physician, or health professional who wishes to hone their writing skills. Medical Writing: A Guide for Clinicians and Academicians, 2e retains all of the fundamental writing advice of the first edition and has been expanded to include two brand new chapters: How to Write a Research Protocol (including why a research project needs a written protocol, elements of the research protocol and common problems) How to Write a Grant Proposal (including sections on government and private grant funding sources, what you need to know about grant writing, and elements of a successful grant proposal) New information is also included throughout the book on becoming a successful writer, medical tables and figures, conflict of interest and disclosures, how to review a scientific article, statistical analysis, “pay-to-publish” journal publishing, electronic submission of manuscripts, issues in medical publishing and the future of medical writing and publication. New appendices address commonly encountered research and statistical terms and memorable aphorisms regarding writing, medical and otherwise.
