Rubella and Rubeola
Publisher: Chelsea House Publications | 2009-02-28 | ISBN: 1604132302 |118 pages

Rubella and rubeola were once commonly thought of as childhood diseases. In the last few decades, these illnesses have been largely brought under control in developed nations through widespread vaccinations. In developing areas, however, these viral infections still pose a threat to children and adults alike. Although both diseases are known commonly as the measles, the viruses that cause them are not closely related. "German measles" (rubella) is caused rubivirus, and the red measles (rubeola) is caused by morbilivirus. "Rubella and Rubeola" takes a look at the history, pathology, potential complications, prevention, and treatment of these diseases. The chapters include: An Ancient Plague; Viral Diseases; Rubeola: The Red Measles; Rubella: The "German Measles"; Epidemiology; and, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention.

"West Nile Encephalitis Virus Infection: Viral Pathogenesis and the Host Immune Response"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0387798390 | 485 pages

West Nile virus is a neurotropic flavivirus that has emerged globally as a significant cause of viral encephalitis in humans. Infection of humans is associated with a febrile illness that can progress to meningitis and encephalitis with symptoms including cognitive dysfunction and flaccid paralysis. Following its introduction to the United States in 1999, West Nile virus rapidly disseminated across North America. Outbreaks of West Nile virus fever and neuroinvasive disease now occur annually in the United States, with about 23,000 diagnosed human cases between 1999 and 2006, and likely millions of undiagnosed infections. At present no vaccines or specific therapies for West Nile virus are currently approved for humans.
The emergence of West Nile virus in the Western hemisphere and the corresponding increase in disease burden has been accompanied by intensive study. West Nile Encephalitis Virus Infection: Viral Pathogenesis and the Host Immune Response focuses on recent studies that have identified key steps in the molecular pathogenesis of West Nile virus infection. After introducing the scale of the global problem, the genetic diversity, and the clinical syndromes, the initial chapters describe our most up-to-date understanding of the pathogenesis steps in animals and the viral sequence determinants that mediate virulence. Subsequent chapters focus on the earliest innate host immune response that controls West Nile virus spread and include recent experiments on pathogen recognition receptors, IFN antiviral cascades, and mechanisms of West Nile virus antagonism. The book explores in detail the host-pathogen interface, and analyzes the latest data describing how a balance between host protective responses, host immunopathology, West Nile-induced pathology, and West Nile virus immune evasion determines infection outcome. Finally, the book concludes with novel approaches and prospects for human vaccines and therapeutics

"Neurotropic Viral Infections"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 0521869641 | 484 pages

Viral infections of the central nervous system or neurotropic viruses are often lethal. These diseases range from polio and measles, to rabies, Varicella-zoster, Herpes, West Nile, Japanese encephalitis, and AIDS. Such infections have profound public health consequences, and the understanding of these diseases involves understanding the interaction between the nervous system and the immune system. This book shows each individual virus, discussing the diseases they cause and the mechanisms by which they cause and spread those diseases. Detection, treatment and prevention are also discussed. Included is coverage of novel and beneficial uses of neurotropic viruses for gene therapy and tumor lysis. Neurotropic Viral Infection has been written in a style suitable for a wide professional audience, and will appeal to anyone from graduate students and postdocs to clinicians and public health professionals.

"Encephalitis"

ed. by Sergey Tkachev
InTeOp | 2013 | ISBN: 9535109259 9789535109259 | 292 pages

In this book the different aspects of encephalitises of different etiology are discussed such as diagnostics, treatment and clinical management of patients. Also, the data on epidemiology, monitoring, pathology and diagnostics of different viral causative agents are discussed.

Encephalitises are a group of inflammatory human and animal diseases of brain caused essentially by different pathogens. In spite of evident success in approaches for prevention, diagnostics and treatment during the last decades, the encephalitises of different etiology still constitute a menace for thousands of people all around the world.
