Morris Levin
"Comprehensive Review of Headache Medicine"
Oxford University Press, USA | 2008-05-08 | ISBN: 0195366735 | 336 pages

Headache Medicine has recently become an official medical subspecialty. Practitioners who specialize in the field come from many different backgrounds including neurology, internal medicine, anesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, dentistry and others. A great deal of research is being done in HM, and, as a result, the field is one which is growing rapidly in every way. Interestingly, most patients with headache are not being treated by specialists in HM, in large part because of the vast numbers of patients requiring medical attention for headache disorders, and the relatively small number of bona fide specialists. Thus, there is a need for resources to guide these practitioners as they manage headache patients. There are several excellent scholarly texts in the field and numerous books for the public about headache. There are really no concise manuals of HM, however, there are books aimed at the bulk of skilled practitioners taking care of the major share of headache sufferers, who wish to understand the important concepts of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in this complex field. This is the aim of Dr. Levin's book which consists of 4 parts: Part 1- Headache Medicine Basic Science, Part 2- Diagnosis of Primary Headache Disorders, Part 3- Diagnosis of Secondary Headache Disorders, and Part 4- Headache Treatment.
Chapters in each section are concise, but include cutting edge information about these aspects of headache medicine. The organization of the contents of this book is similar to the Curriculum for Headache Medicine designed by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) which is the organization responsible for accrediting Headache Medicine training programs and accrediting individual practitioners. The content of the book mirrors that of the UCNS board examination as well. Chapters include key tables and illustrations. Review questions are included at the end of each chapter and serve as a study resource. The editor is a charter diplomate of the UCNS HM examination and has directed board review courses for the American Headache Society and Headache Cooperative of New England. All of the eligible chapter authors have taken and passed this exam as well. The International Classification of Headache Disorders is used throughout this text and a concerted effort has been made to base content on evidence when available, rather than personal practices. Each chapter is intended as a stand alone monograph and as a result the book can be read in virtually any order.

"Electrocardiography for the Family Physician: The Essentials"
Publisher: Brown Walker Press | pages: 128 | 2005 | ISBN: 1581124414

Family physicians are often the first, and sometimes the only, point of contact for many patients within the health care system. The standard 12-lead electrocardiogram is one of the most common tests obtained and interpreted by the family physician, with most of the physicians reading their own recordings and basing clinical decisions on their findings. It has been shown that family physicians can achieve proficiency in the interpretation of over 95 percent of all electrocardiogram findings seen in the primary care setting. Although computerized interpretation is widely available, it is considered unreliable in up to 20 percent of the cases, making competency and interpretation by family physicians an essential skill. This book provides the necessary skills for family physicians to use in interpreting electrocardiograms, both in their offices and in the emergency rooms of their hospitals. It also should prove of value to other primary care physicians, as well as medical students and residents of nearly all medical specialties. As the subtitle states, this book is about the essential elements involved in electrocardiographic interpretation. It is not all inclusive. However, it does cover the abnormalities most likely to be seen by family physicians in their everyday practice of medicine.

"Internal Medicine: An Illustrated Radiological Guide"
Springer | 2010-03-19 | ISBN: 3642037089 | 454 pages

This book explains how radiology can be a powerful tool for establishing the diagnosis of many internal medicine diseases. It is organized in the classic fashion for internal medicine books, with eleven chapters covering the different internal medicine specialties. Within these chapters, more than 450 diseases are considered. For each disease, radiological and clinical features are displayed in images and high-quality digital medical illustrations, and those differential diagnoses are identified that can be ruled out by imaging alone. In addition, the pathophysiology underlying the radiological features is described, explaining why a particular sign is seen on MR images, CT scans, or plain radiographs. The book will serve as an excellent radiological atlas for internal medicine practitioners and family physicians, showing disease presentations that may be hard to find in standard medical textbooks and explaining which imaging modalities are likely to be most informative in particular patients.

Sexually Transmissible Infections in Clinical Practice: A problem-based approach
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 241 | 2009-10-02 | ISBN 1848825560

Undergraduate medical education has moved away from the former didactic style of teaching to one of problem-based learning. The specialty of Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) that includes sexually transmissible infections (STIs) lends itself to the latter; self-directed learning. This is particularly important as time allocated to the specialty in most medical curricula is short, and the student cannot possibly cover all the topics with which he/she is expected to be familiar. Several excellent textbooks on GUM exist, but they mostly follow the traditional format, with emphasis on individual diseases rather than case-scenarios. The books that follow a more syndromic approach do not pose questions to help the student understand how the material presented can be translated into clinical practice. As specialist clinics become more hard-pressed, family medicine practitioners are thus becoming increasingly involved in the management of STIs and there is without doubt now a need for a book specifically designed for problem solving in STI management.

Amyloid and Related Disorders: Surgical Pathology and Clinical Correlations
Published: 2012-04-03 | ISBN: 1607613883 | 443 pages

Abnormal proteins have been known to be associated with various pathologies. Most notably, these involve amyloidoses, monoclonal protein deposits associated with plasma cell dyscrasia/multiple myeloma, cryoglobulins and various related organized deposits. Systemic Amyloid and Related Disorders presents an overview of recent developments in the area including clinical presentation, etiology, pathogenesis, and differential diagnosis. The rationale for various therapies is also discussed. While the main portion of the text focuses on renal pathology, the involvement of other organ systems, such as cardiac, gastrointestinal and pulmonary pathology is also covered. This approach provides a unifying concept of these pathologic processes, which appear to have systemic involvement, and which have, hitherto, not been universally appreciated. Awareness of these diseases among a wider audience of pathologists may increase the rate of their diagnosis as well as that of earlier diagnosis. This volume will be invaluable to renal pathologists, cardiac pathologists, gastro-intestinal pathologists and general pathologists.
